First Blog Post & Peter's Baptism at Ave Maria University
Welcome! This feels virtually awkward so I'm just going to jump right in. If you don't know anything about me or why you are reading this right now, you can start here: About For those of you who know a little bit about me, you're probably aware that Steve & I traveled to Florida last weekend for the Baptism of our Godson, Peter. He is the most adorable baby of all time (biased) & he was asleep 98% of the day, so his life is goals.Other highlights from our weekend include: Getting in trouble for having a guy in my dorm; trying to find food in Ave Maria, FL; and having our flight canceled on Sunday, but more on those later. Although it was a short trip, we had a great time and we are both so grateful to have been part of Peter's welcome into the Church. Photographic proof that we were there & it was fun:
Finding Food in Ave Maria, FL at Midnight
If you've ever been to Ave Maria, FL or Ave Maria University, or the surrounding area, you are already laughing at me. When we arrived late Friday night we assumed it would be super easy to find something to eat at 11:00 pm, because why not? Between the airport & Ave Maria we found one potential restaurant-- a sketchy Chinese food place that seemed to be in open-but-not limbo.Steve went in and asked if they had General Tso's tofu, and that escalated quickly so we left. After getting settled in our room we ventured back out and ended up driving a good 40 minutes off campus, only to stumble upon a lone Burger King. I kept saying "Is this veggie burger actually good, or am I just starving?" This brings us to another highlight of the weekend, and a first for me,
Getting in Trouble for Having a Guy in My Dorm
My brother & sister-in-law work & attend AMU, so they generously offered us a place to stay on campus. It was a nicer space than ever I had seen at FSU, and you guys it was Steve's first sleepover in a dorm. He was all, "First night in a dorm & I have a girl sleeping over" & I was like "chill, bruh."So we are chatting and eating Burger King like it's Zagat rated, & there's a knock on the door. We ignore it, naturally, because we are adults and it can't be for us. A few minutes pass and the knock comes again, this time with some indecipherable words. I tell Steve to answer, and I am ready to eavesdrop like a pro. Here is a generalization of that convo:Rez Life: Hi, I'm sorry, but there are no guys allowed in this dorm.::Long awkward pause, which I take for Steve's momentary fear & uncertainty::Steve: Oh, ok. I'm actually here for a Baptism tomorrow. My brother is Dan, and I'm here with my wife, and I didn't know --Rez Life: Ohmygosh I am so sorry. Ok. Ok. Oh, I see the resemblance.Me: LOLOLOLLLLLZ.So we didn't really get in trouble trouble, but it was the thrill of it, ya know? We lead such a dangerous life.
Having Our Flight Canceled on Sunday
The rest of the weekend was wonderful & full of cute baby stuff, and then came Sunday. My alarm goes off at 6:00am which is ugly on multiple levels, but I enjoy my first sunrise of 2017. I remember riding in the car and being like "2017, this is so beautiful. Life is great, the world is an amazing place. Traveling is a dream, this is going to be my year" and other melodramatic things you think as a car passenger. Not five minutes later did we find out that our flight home was canceled. Glory Hallelujah. Our next possible option was a 9pm flight out of Orlando. NINE PM, ladies and gentlemen. It was 7:30 am. Aka kill me dead.Instead of wasting away our existence in RSW we rented a car and spent the day running around Ft. Myers. I did my makeup in the bathroom of my childhood Barnes & Noble, which was weird, and we found a cute little vegan cafe downtown for lunch. I'll give that its own post later. Until then, here is an awkward bathroom selfie while doing my makeup.Steve was like, "why do you have to do your makeup? You look beautiful." And I was all, "You sweet, ignorant husband. If I run into someone from high school looking like the walking dead then obviously they'll assume my life has gone to s#!% and that will be the End As We Know It." Vanity & Stuff.Once we returned to the airport we boarded a bus with a bunch of randos who'd also had their flight cancelled, and drove 4 hours up the middle of bumble-you-know-what Florida. Besides the fact that we saw our first sunset of 2017, it was a terribly uncomfortable situation. The bus shook constantly, Steve ate an entire pack of Mentos (gross) and I was pointing out every single cow as if I were seeing cattle for the first time.Thankfully we made it home to Ocean City at 1am, just in time to freeze to death of snow. All kidding aside, this was my first experience as an Aunt & Godmother, and it was so special. All of the sleeplessness and travel hiccups & mentos smell made it that much more memorable. Do any of y'all remember you first experiences as an aunt/uncle/Godparent? Do tell!I can't wait to share more with you as Hey Katie unfolds, thanks so much for reading along.PS -- if you're a spelling psycho like me, you might notice I can't figure out how the H I want to spell "canceled" every other paragraph. Anxiety Major, as Zenon would say. I have decided on the US version, canceled. yur welcome.
